I STILL NEED MOTIVATION!

It feels like ages since I last wrote on this blog - you could call it that too. I'm back and, hopefully - said with a lot of determination - for a long while too. Perhaps till the end of my days here on earth.

Now, throughout my life I've always needed motivation as dearly as humans need oxygen. Wait a minute! What is motivation?

Motivation? I personally prefer this definition: The psychological feature that arouses an organism to action toward a desired goal; the reason for the action; that which gives purpose and direction to behaviour. Example: "we did not understand his motivation".

Looking at this definition, the question "Why do I need motivation?" fades away. We are then left with the thought "How can I get the best motivation that will serve me?"

In this quest to keep myself fired-up, I have found this quote by the late Zig very useful. It explains why you shouldn't stop spurring yourself on.

There are several motivational theories, these include the Content theories (Abraham Maslow's heirachy of needs and Herzberg's two-factor theory), Alderfer's ERG theory, self-determination theory and, more recently developed, the Temporal Motivation theory, among others. It'll serve you well to go through some of them.

However, the summary of any teaching on motivation I believe will be to:
  1. Identify what you want and how soon you want to acheive it
  2. Be clear on how much it means to you
  3. Commit your whole heart towards acheiving it - especially at the beginning
  4. Realize that once you give-up your pursuit of your goal chances are you will never get back to it ever again - and a good opportunity would be lost.
In conclusion, try as much as possible to do what you are most passionate about, what your whole being moves naturally towards mostly, what you love to do. Explosive energy awaits you in this arena.
